Former Michigan State wrestler and four-time collegiate All-American Nick Simmons finished second at the Olympic Trials in the 55 kg/121 pounds freestyle division on Sunday. Simmons defeated 2008 Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo in the semi-finals before losing to Sam Hazewinkel in the championship match.

Jon Jones kept his light-heavyweight title belt by keeping Rashad Evans at the end of his strikes at the Ultimate Fighting Championship's show early Sunday. Jones earned a unanimous decision against Evans in the main event of UFC 145 in Atlanta. Two judges scored the fight 49-46. One had it 50-45, giving every round to the champion.

Junior Steve Andrus placed second at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the 120 kg/264.5 pounds Greco-Roman division on Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena after being selected as a wildcard. Andrus was impressive and notched multiple upsets in the challenge bracket, going 3-0, but fell to 2008 Olympian Dremiel Byers of the U.S. Army in the championship match.

It's been a relatively long and at times difficult wait for the diehard UFC fans since the last proper pay-per-view fight card, UFC 144 in Japan in late February. But that's nothing compared to what former Michigan State wrestler Rashad Evans, 32, has gone through, a 14-month-plus month wait for the chance to settle a seemingly never-ending score with former training partner and current champ Jon Jones. Injuries to both men had derailed the fight, but the hype surrounding their feud seemed to grow with each passing month.

When Jon Jones defends his UFC light heavyweight title Saturday against Rashad Evans, it will mark the first time in organization history that former teammates under the same trainer have fought one another for a championship. Former training partners turned rivals, the two have been destined to fight since Jones took the UFC light-heavyweight championship from Mauricio (Shogun) Rua while subbing in for an injured Evans two years ago. Evans then left Jackson’s MMA and formed his own camp, the Blackzilians, in south Florida.

Senior Curran Jacobs advanced in the consolation bracket at 174 pounds with a 5-1 decision over Seth Creasy of Lock Haven and a fall over Ryan LeBlanc of Indiana in session three of the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Anthony Jones Jr. (157), Ian Hinton (184) and Steve Andrus (heavyweight) were each eliminated after dropping consolation round-four matches in Friday's third session at the Scottrade Center. Each went 1-2 in the tournament.
