It’s still worth mentioning that MSU played awfully well for some extended stretches before Dawson emerged. Take this team as is, give it a No. 2 seed (which MSU likely will get unless it bombs at the Big Tournament on Friday against Iowa or Illinois), equip it with the usual Izzo-March preparation swagger and it might still be able to do something.

I think UNC might be a little bit better, too, but besides, that I don’t really favor anyone (over them). I’ve really been pleasantly surprised at the strides Adreian Payne and Derrick Nix have made this year. They’ve gotten better and better, very poised in the post and have improved a great deal, and that’s been the difference for this team. It’s really a connected group.”

Michigan State opens the 2012 Big Ten Tournament as the No. 1 seed after sharing the Big Ten regular-season championship with Ohio State and Michigan. This is the fourth time the Spartans hold the No. 1 seed. In their first game, the Spartans will face the winner of Thursday's Iowa/Illinois first-round game. MSU was 1-0 this season vs. Iowa, defeating the Hawkeyes in East Lansing, while going 0-1 vs. Illinois, falling to the Fighting Illini in Champaign.
