Former Michigan State track & field standout Fred Johnson died on Friday, May 11 in Grand Rapids. He was 87. Johnson was inducted in the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993, as a tribute to his outstanding accomplishments as a member of the Spartan track & field program.

The Big Ten Conference office announced on Tuesday the 2012 All-Big Ten women’s and men’s outdoor track and field teams and individual award winners. Representing Michigan State on the first team is redshirt freshman Leah O’Connor. Senior Becca Buchholtz is the lone Spartan on the All-Big Ten Second Team after earning a silver medal in the High Jump last weekend during the outdoor championships.

The 6-foot-5, 230-pound weakside defensive end is ranked 250th in the Rivals 250. Being ranked on the esteemed list is an honor, no doubt. But Bower is far from a household name. The Michigan State rowing program has earned a berth in the NCAA National Championship Regatta, which will be held May 25-27 in on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, NJ. The 16-team field was announced by the NCAA Selection Committee on Tuesday afternoon, and the Spartans will be rowing in the sport's National Championship event for the 14th time in its 15 varsity seasons. MSU is one of four teams representing the Big Ten Conference (Ohio State, Wisconsin, and Michigan).

Michigan State's athletic department is in the black financially, according to the latest figures compiled by USA Today in its annual database (though, somewhat confusingly, it's not among the 22 profitable departments in USA Today's chart). The reason, it seems, is the $3.65 million subsidy the university gave the athletic department in 2011, a number which caught even Spartans athletic director Mark Hollis by surprise.

Former Michigan State running back Lorenzo White was not among the latest class of 14 players and three coaches for the College Football Hall of Fame. White was a two-time All-American with the Spartans and finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1985 and 1987. He led the nation in rushing in 1985 with 1,908 yards.

Jake Boss Jr. remembers the first time he saw David Garner throw a pitch. It was during a winter baseball camp, and the Michigan State coach was so impressed, he ran over to see exactly who it was and how hard he threw. It was Garner, and the pitch was clocked at 91 miles per hour. It was his first pitch, and when Boss asked if his arm was in shape enough to throw that hard, Garner informed him he hadn't picked up a ball since July — nearly six months earlier.
