Tickets for the seventh annual Crosstown Showdown between the Michigan State baseball team and the Lansing Lugnuts (Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays) are now on sale at both MSUSpartans.com and LansingLugnuts.com. All tickets for the game are priced at $10. The Spartan Ticket Office (517-355-1610), located at Jenison Field House, will also take phone and walkup sales.

Michigan State sophomore catcher and designated hitter Blaise Salter has been named Big Ten Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday. Salter hit .667 (8-for-12) over the weekend sweep at Santa Clara with one double, a home run, four RBIs and four runs scored.

Michigan State baseball defeated Santa Clara in both games of the doubleheader on Saturday to complete the weekend sweep, the first of the season for MSU. The Spartans improved to 9-7 on the year, while SCU fell to 8-12. Strong performances on the mound and a combined 35 hits in the two games sealed the sweep for the Spartans.

Michigan State baseball heads out West for a three-game set with Santa Clara this weekend (March 15-16) in Santa Clara, Calif. The Spartans and Broncos will play at 9 p.m. ET on Friday and then a doubleheader on Saturday. MSU is coming off a spring break trip that was riddled with storms, forcing two games to be postponed and another cancelled. On the trip, the Spartans defeated its seventh ranked team since 2000, and the second-highest ranked in that span after taking down No. 7 Kentucky, 6-1 on March 9.

Starting off fresh after last season’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1979, Michigan State baseball returns 20 letter winners from last year, who won a total of 37 games. These 37 wins mark the third most in the school’s history. In regards to the beginning of the baseball season, head coach Jake Boss says, “I know guys have been working hard on their own before today and we’re excited to get things kicked off and get it rolling.”

Junior right hander David Garner shut down No. 7 Kentucky on Saturday afternoon, pitching 8 1/3 innings while giving up just two hits and one run in a 6-1 win for the Spartans. The Wildcats only tally came off a solo home run in the eighth inning by Paul McConkey. Garner was riding a shutout into the eighth inning and had six strikeouts for MSU. UK fell to 12-2 while MSU improved to 6-6.

Michigan State baseball lost a close battle to No. 7 Kentucky on Friday afternoon, 2-1 at Cliff Hagan Stadium. Senior Andrew Waszak got a no decision, giving up just one run in 6 1/3 innings of work. A Wildcats' home run in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the difference after the Spartans tied the game in the top of the inning. MSU falls to 5-6 on the season, while Kentucky improves to 12-1.

The Spartan baseball team wraps up its spring break trip with a three-game set at No. 7 Kentucky this weekend (March 8-10) in Lexington, Ky. Michigan State has had four games affected by weather as of late and its Tuesday game with Tennessee Tech was cancelled due to storms in the area. The Spartans came out on top against the Golden Eagles on Wednesday, 5-3, bringing their record to .500.
