Cheky was a mainstay in the outfield for the Spartans as he appeared in 190 games during his four years in East Lansing (2012-15), posting a .291 career batting average. The speedy outfielder set the MSU single-season record for stolen bases in 2014 with 29 and finished his career with a total of 79.

Baseball msuspartans.com —  Msgr. John “Jack” Zeitler, captain of the 1954 Michigan State baseball team, passed away earlier this week. He was 83. Zeitler was part of MSU’s first Big Ten championship team in 1954. The Spartans won the District IV title, advancing College World Series where they finished in third place.

Part of a record eight Spartans who were taken in the MLB draft June 8-10, Vieaux was one of three MSU underclassmen picked. Outfielder Cam Gibson and left-handed pitcher Anthony Misiewicz both signed contracts shortly after the draft and opted to bypass their final seasons in East Lansing.

Baseball statenews.com —  Cam Gibson was always a Tiger at heart — even before it became official, when the MSU outfielder was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the fifth round of the draft, with the No. 160 overall pick. Gibson’s father, Kirk, is a Detroit legend — Kirk spent 12 seasons with the Tigers, nine from 1979-87 and three more from 1993-95. Kirk, as many know, was a leader on the Tigers 1984 World Series championship team. He was the MVP of the semi finals that year, known as the ALCS in the American league.
