The reward for finishing in fifth place in the CCHA is a first-round bye in the playoffs - a week off and the opportunity to take care of bumps and bruises, rest and get refreshed. The penalty for finish fifth is playing on the road in the second week of the playoff run - the CCHA quarterfinals.

It has become clear that if Michigan State wins this series, the ticket to the NCAA tournament will be punched for the first time since 2008. That's not bad for a team that finished second to last in the CCHA two of the last three seasons, under went a new coaching change, and those coaches put in an entirely different system.

MSU is 68-29-5 all-time against Miami, which includes a 28-11-2 mark in games played in Oxford. In CCHA Tournament play, the Spartans are 9-0 all-time against the Red Hawks; MSU has played Miami in the quarterfinal round in 1985 and 2000, sweeping both series played in East Lansing. The most recent meeting of these two programs in the CCHA Tournament came in the 2006 CCHA Championship game, a contest the Spartans won 2-1 to capture their 11th CCHA Tournament title.

MSU Hockey returns to the ice this weekend with a quarterfinal series at Miami. Friday night will be at 7:35 ET; Saturday and (if necessary) Sunday at 7:05. Miami swept us at Munn right after New Year's (2-1 (OT) and 4-0), and MSU will have to get revenge if they are to take part in the final rounds of the CCHA playoffs (and probably if they are to reach the NCAA tournament as well).
