Sometimes Luck Isn't Enough: UM 5 MSU 3 The Only Colors
There's just no denying it, the Michigan Wolverines were the better hockey team Friday night at Munn Arena. A roster stacked with NHL draft picks that has under-performed most of the season flexed their muscles against the Spartans in a 5-3 victory. The Spartans hung tough, displayed their typical heart and effort under Tom Anastos but the pressure of a B1G lead seemed to get to the young team.

MSU came back on two different occasions – from a 2-0 deficit and 3-2 deficit – and junior forward Ryan Keller registered a hat trick and all three goals for MSU.

Penn State (10-7-1) is fourth, three points back. The Spartans can clinch the title with a victory Friday and a Nittany Lions win. Ice Hockey impact89fm.org —  Last year, Munn Ice Arena would only see a packed house for the annual Michigan game. Other than that, attendance would be hovering in the 5,000 range, even less so for games held over spring break. It should have been expected. The team was not playing well, and the atmosphere at Munn was just subpar most nights. But since the calendar has turned to 2015, Munn has become a formidable place to play.

Ice Hockey freep.com —  "Puck luck" is hockey-speak for a team benefiting from some ethereal intervention. A fortuitous bounce here, a sigh-inducing break there, fortunes quickly changing on a fluke. Coaches and players use it to describe things beyond their control that just seem to happen without explanation. Michigan State had plenty go its way over the weekend away from Munn Arena.

Ice Hockey msuspartans.com —  Jake Hildebrand's stellar goaltending - 38 saves, second shutout in a row and third in his last five games - wasn't the main storyline on Saturday night for Michigan State. Even the sellout crowd of 6,994 that showed up to watch MSU seek its third sweep in a month-and-a-half was a secondary story.
