If there remains skepticism about the Michigan State football program, the Michigan State football program earned it with decades of fits and starts. The Spartans always seemed to drift toward the middle, as if lured there by some kind of mediocrity magnet. In half a decade under Mark Dantonio, they've broken free of that force and moved toward heights last seen in the 1960s.

The Spartan Nation has long been a proud fan base knowing that the MSU athletics are 100% self-sufficient. They get absolutely zero tax dollars or revenue from Michigan State University. They are a stand-alone entity. That is something to be very proud of. It is something that is rare in college athletics.

The last time MSU football had back-to-back seasons with this kind of success was 1965-66. You may have heard of those teams. The 2011 season was one of validation -- and despite some significant losses, 2012 isn't shaping up like 1967.

The Spartans are play selfless and that is a step up from being selfish which is what they were last season. That is something that can’t be taught. This group of players at times has given up great shots only to pass. It hasn’t been an exception, but more like a rule to hear Izzo scream, “Shoot” to his team. Last season terrible shots were taken when great passes to open men were available. This season it is the opposite.
