MSU recorded three victories over the Cyclones, including 16th-ranked Javier Gasca's 5-3 win over No. 12 Earl Hall at 133 pounds in Gasca's first career home dual match. Garth Yenter (141) and Luke Jones (heavyweight) also notched decisions for Michigan State.

Red-shirt freshman Mitch Rogaliner, making his first career start in a Big Ten dual, got things started for the Spartans (2-2) with a 7-5 decision over Jordan Bremer at 125 pounds. With the win, Rogaliner improved to 7-2 on the season.

But even though he now has several, and has made his commitment, he's not about to stop working. "It feels really good; it feels like there's pressure off my shoulders," the Marysville senior said. "But at the same time, I still have business to do. I want to win another state title." Thompson committed this past week to wrestle at Michigan State University. He also considered Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan and Kent State, as well as some Division II programs.

Action will get underway at 9 a.m., with the finals and medal matches slated to start at approximately 6 p.m. More than 25 schools and 500 wrestlers will compete in two divisions (freshman/sophomore and open) on 10 to 12 mats. The tournament is a double-elimination event and no team scores are kept.

Russell finished third at the MHSAA state championships as a senior at 215 pounds with a 43-9 record and helped lead the Shamrocks to three consecutive team state titles.
