Matt Gatens scored 20 and Aaron White had 13, and those are Iowa's two best players right now. Iowa has good length and athleticism (insert Branden Dawson lament) but the Hawkeyes don't have much beef around the basket. That played out in the only meeting between these teams -- a 95-61 MSU romp, way back on Jan. 10 at Breslin, that was the best offensive performance of the season for the Spartans.

“We’ve been able to work both sides of the ball and really be aggressive and compete a little bit more, and I feel like everybody’s gotten better this week,” Suzy Merchant said. “I use the acronym ‘FEET.’ To me, we want focus, we want energy, we want effort and we want toughness. Instead of taking Jim Delany's idea of naming the conference trophy after a coach who was very successful 70 years ago with a school that hasn't been part of the Big Ten in 50 years, I think we'll pursue a more modern award name or at least a more Spartan one. Our awards will be called the Perles trophies. When MSU wins it's next Rose Bowl, the name will be updated to the Mark Dantonio award.

In the moments after Michigan State’s win against Georgia in the Outback Bowl, Keith Nichol, Michigan State’s senior wide receiver from Lowell, was a hugger and philosopher. He had hugged the ball to his chest on a big touchdown catch in the second half of Monday’s 33-30 triple-overtime win against Georgia, and the realization that his college football career was ending was hitting home as he talked to the media.

"We’re just focused. Guys are just focused on leaving their own mark," said Michigan State senior Draymond Green, part of Final Four teams as a freshman and sophomore. "That’s what our focus is, leave our footprint in the sand, start a new era. Like coach said, I’m always talking about the (Mateen) Cleaves era and the Magic era and (Scott) Skiles era — leave your own era. ... That’s what this team is trying to do."

Playing Division I college soccer has been a dream come true so far for Charlevoix’s Ben Myers. The pursuit of that dream led him to Clemson University in South Carolina — some 1,000 miles away from friends and family in Northern Michigan — and that distance weighed heavily on the mind of Myers, who left Charlevoix High School in the spring of 2011 as the school’s all-time leading scorer.
