Boxing had a good run at MSU. Under Coach George Makris, Spartan boxers dominated opponents at regional and national competitions, achieving two NCAA national team championships (1951 and 1955) and nine individual NCAA titles. MSU featured any number of good boxers back when that sport was allowed by the NCAA.

Michigan is MSU's biggest rival. Minnesota is Wisconsin's biggest rival. But in the world of college basketball, MSU and Wisconsin fans hate each other more than any other. Both fanbases hate the other coach more than any other. The MSU/U-M rivalry is getting there, but the MSU/Wisconsin rivalry has been there for a decade. And now the football rivalry has added fuel to the fire.

The Spartan Men’s Basketball team topped Purdue in East Lansing this afternoon in an impressive effort, 83-58. Freshman Forward, Branden Dawson chipped in a team high 14 points highlighted by some acrobatic dunks in the second half. Derrick Nix and Austin Thornton followed suit by pitching in 12 and 11 respectively, both off the bench.

If you've never heard of the Directors' Cup, it's a way to determine the top college athletic programs across most all sports. School are awarded points based on how predetermined number of sports teams perform. The cup is divided into three sessions: fall, winter and spring. In the final fall standings for 2011-12, MSU came in at No. 25.

So um, kind of a lot happened this week in MSU football. In case you have forgotten, MSU won it's first bowl game under Mark Dantonio. It helps when MSU isn't playing the top QB in the NFL draft, with a lost WR corps or four first round defensive draft picks from Alabama.
