Amid the Kirk Cousins' rising NFL stock, there has been little critical in-depth evaluation. Leave it to ESPN NFL Draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. to offer a bit of blunt honesty, even as he praised the former Michigan State quarterback's leadership, work ethic and passion for the game. During a teleconference Friday, Kiper said Cousins was either a second- or third-round pick and "no worst than the third."

Alright, so you've got your basic outside zone run, and that's working pretty good, but your opponent is adjusting. They're starting to put like, a bunch of dudes in the box to stop the run. A whole bunch of dudes.

For the third year in a row, a Michigan State defensive back will be taken in the NFL Draft -- and don't expect that trend to end any time soon. Following in the footsteps of Jeremy Ware (Oakland, Round 7, 2010) and Chris L. The Spartans have been loading up on both the offensive and defensive lines and the depth is really starting to pay off. Keith Mumphery remembers coming to the realization that he'd have to start talking on the football field. It just didn't happen as quickly as he thinks it should have. "It didn't really click," Michigan State's redshirt sophomore wideout said.

Michigan State's 2-92 combination could have opponents seeing double this fall. William Gholston may wear a kicker's number, but the 6-foot-7, 275-pounds defensive end doesn't look like any other No. 2 in the nation. Joel Heath sports a more conventional No. 92, but at 6-6, 277, "he's really a carbon copy" of Gholston, according to head coach Mark Dantonio.

Spring practices are wrapping up, and Michigan State looks pretty good on both sides of the ball. The last BOTRC post on spring practices went through all of the players to watch during spring. One of those players were QB Andrew Maxwell, and unfortunately, he’s sidelined for the rest of spring with a knee injury, which is pretty bad for two reasons.

Not only has Michigan State's recent success returned the Spartans to prominence in the Big Ten, it has also started to have a dramatic effect on the future of the players. With the NFL draft beginning Thursday, the Spartans have a shot at matching the 2000 team that saw seven players get selected. And if things fall the right way, they could surpass that number.

Despite Saturday being the MSU football team’s final scrimmage of the spring before training camp in August, Andrew Maxwell will have to sit this one out. The knee sprain Maxwell suffered during a team scrimmage almost two weeks ago has kept him limited in practice, and although there was a chance he could return for the Spring Game on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Spartan Stadium, head coach Mark Dantonio said Maxwell is officially not playing.
