The Spartans compiled a score of 1,350 points to win the event for the first time since 2009. The women's team finished in second place with 856 points. Combined, Michigan State finished in first place of 14 of the 48 events on the weekend. The Spartans finished the weekend with 20 new times in the top-10 all-time fastest times, including two new school records.

In the preliminary rounds on Friday morning, the Spartans came away with the fastest time in five of the 10 events. The Spartans came away winners of five finals. After the first day of competition, the men lead with a score of 419 and the women are in second with a score of 287, trailing Northwestern.

The Spartans will be joined by host Northwestern, Saint Louis, UIC, Truman State, and the women's team from Air Force. The meet will hold prelims starting at 10 a.m. ET each morning with the finals in the afternoon at 6 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

She currently has the team’s top time for the women’s 50 back (26.38), which Bonin swam on Oct. 17 against Iowa. This past weekend in Buffalo, Bonin set the team’s season record for the 100-yard back (57.64) and the 200-yard back (2:05.88).

The women’s swimming and diving team improved to 3-4 on the season, as the Spartans came away winners of 11 of the 16 events on the night. “It is always nice to get a win,” said head coach Matt Gianiodis. “We lost to this team last year so our girls were happy to win this one. The biggest thing is we bounced back. When we go indoors, we are a much different team.”

The Spartan captain is trying to become the 17th Michigan State student to be honored with the prestigious scholarship and the first Spartan student-athlete to be honored since Molly Brennan in 1982.
