The Spartans are entering their second week of practice in preparation for the 2012 season opener against 11th-ranked St. John's on Friday, Feb. 17 in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge in Dunedin, Fla.

Michigan State junior right-hander Tony Wieber has been named to the Stopper of the Year Award Preseason Watch List, as announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association of America. The award has been given annually since 2005 to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball.

Michigan State is coming off its Big Ten Championship season in 2011 — its first sine 1979 — and the team is filled with some of the conference’s top talent heading into 2012. Several Spartans made an appearance in the College Baseball Insider 2012 Big Ten preview — voted as the best in various categories by conference coaches.

Dad is Kirk Gibson, who was a Spartans All-America in both baseball and football in 1978, before he went on to play for the Tigers and L.A. Dodgers, and now manages the Arizona Diamondbacks.
