Michigan State quarterbacks aren’t just heading to the NFL. They’re staying. Look at Cardinals QB Drew Stanton and Bears QB Brian Hoyer. Both were recruited to MSU before the Mark Dantonio era — Hoyer by John L. Smith, Stanton by Bobby Williams. Both started NFL games in 2016. But the success didn’t stop when Dantonio was hired. He helped develop Hoyer into a player who has started 31 games in an eight-year pro career.

In his 22nd year as Michigan State basketball’s head coach after being a longtime assistant, there isn’t much Tom Izzo hasn’t experienced. He battled through two NIT seasons to start his head coaching career. He’s had bubble teams and he’s led teams to No. 1 seeds. He’s won a national title and been to seven Final Fours and he’s also lost in the first round — though not often. He’s always prided himself on having teams that are tough, rebound and defend, but he’s also won with groups that could score and shoot the basketball with anybody.

Michigan State is coming off a confounding season in which it went from a 12-2 mark and playoff spot in 2015 to a 3-9 record. It was an epic plummet for this proud program. The Spartans had many issues in 2016, including inconsistent quarterback performance and spotty play in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Add it all up, and Michigan State endured its first losing season since 2009. And it was the first time the program missed a bowl since 2006. Mark Dantonio and company will move ahead, but they will have to do so without these five key players.

Twenty-one FBS programs will have a different head coach in 2017 than they started with in 2016. This isn’t anything new; coaching is a migratory profession. Suitcases don’t stay unpacked very long very often. Whether it’s a new head coach or assistants, coaching staffs change annually. But Michigan State has been a relatively stable exception to that rule for the past decade, since Mark Dantonio was hired to replace John L. Smith.

Tom Izzo entered Sunday’s Michigan State game against Ohio State fully confident in the health of Miles Bridges’ ankle and happy with his progression back into the lineup from the injury that kept him out for seven games. That was all good news. But it didn’t mean the Spartans head coach was going to deviate from his plan for his star player.

Tom Izzo gets it.He gets why fans are frustrated by his rotation — one many detractors feel played into Sunday’s loss at Ohio State. He gets why there’s frustration over the lack of consistency, especially from players who’ve been around the block like senior Eron Harris. And he gets why there is plenty of consternation over a 12-7 overall record.
