The Vikings announced on Monday that they have exercised their option on Waynes’ contract for the 2019 season. The option is guaranteed for injury only and sets Waynes up to make a base salary of just over $9 million.

Michigan State is entering a crowded recruiting field for a highly touted prospect in South Carolina guard Josiah James. But the Spartans have a leg up over every school in the country in one category: they are his father’s alma mater. Michigan State offered a scholarship to James, the five-star guard, on Sunday, according to his AAU team.

Michigan State had just one player — center Brian Allen — taken in this year’s NFL draft. Keeping the Spartans’ draft streak alive next year shouldn’t be as dramatic. ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. said earlier this month that the Spartans “will have several” NFL prospects next year at this time. And depending on how this season goes for a number of MSU’s juniors, it could be more.

“That has been my goal all along, to play both sports,” The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Berghorst said. “That was huge that they gave me that opportunity. I was excited about that. Both coaches are cool with me doing it. There is a guy in the Class of 2018 that is coming in to do it, and another one in (the Class of 2019) who is going try to do both as well, so they are good with it.” The rapport he built up with MSU’s football coach Mark Dantonio and baseball coach Jake Boss was crucial, too.

Michigan State has their seventh verbal commitment of their 2019 football recruiting class, but also the second football recruit to also commit to the baseball team in Zeeland East’s Adam Berghorst. Berghorst (6-7, 245 pounds) received 16 scholarship offers for football as a defensive end, but is also a highly regarded pitcher. He joins Toledo Central Catholic’s Jase Bowen, who will play wide receiver on the football team and shortstop on the baseball team.

In less than 24 hours, Cole has managed to flip three players from some of college hockey’s traditional power houses to play in East Lansing. The commit spree started on Wednesday when news broke that Cole and Christian Krygier, two defenseman from Novi, Michigan had decided to decommit from the University of Wisconsin and commit to Michigan State. They are the younger brothers of Brock Krygier, a defenseman who played for the Spartans from 2012-2015.

The Big Ten champion Michigan State women’s golf team will take part in the NCAA Austin Regional, it was announced on Wednesday evening by the NCAA. The Spartans are the No. 3 seed in the Austin Regional and will play May 7-9 at the University of Texas Golf Club.

Former Spartan Lourawls “Tum Tum” Nairn Jr. did not have the same path of playing basketball compared to his teammates. After moving from his home in Nassau, Bahamas when he was only 13 years old, he continued his new passion on a path that he said he knew God had made for him.

Speaking to high school coaches at the Horatio Williams Foundation on Wednesday night in Detroit, the Michigan State coach pointed out he had just returned from Columbus, Ohio, for a ceremony remembering former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce, who died Friday at age 87.
