What’s made Winston especially tough to defend this season has been the 3-point shooting. He technically doesn’t qualify to be considered the No. 1 shooter from long range because of an odd requirement that players make at least 2.5 threes a game. Winston is averaging 2.3 a game, so the official stats say the leader is shooting 52.2 percent.

For the fourth time in five seasons, Michigan State will meet Ohio State in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament … The best-of-three series will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and, if necessary, Sunday. The Spartans defeated Ohio State, 6-3, in their last meeting on Feb. 3 in Columbus … MSU went 1-3 against OSU this season.

Connor Cook was one of Jon Gruden’s all-time favorite pupils from his QB Camp show on ESPN two years ago. So you’d think Gruden would be thrilled to have the former Michigan State “gunslinger” on his Oakland Raiders roster as Derek Carr’s backup.

Brian Lewerke and LJ Scott are givens. It’s the backup battle brewing behind them that provide some of the biggest questions for Michigan State football this spring. Lewerke will be at quarterback and Scott at running back, barring injury or unforeseen circumstance between now and MSU’s Aug. 31 season-opener against Utah State at Spartan Stadium.

Michigan State women’s basketball opens the 25th Big Ten Tournament as the No. 10 seed. The Spartans will take on No. 7 Indiana on Thursday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Fox Sports Detroit and BTN 2Go with Lisa Byington and Christy Winters Scott on the call. The Spartans enter the tournament on a two-game winning streak with a 17-12 overall record.

To kick off the 2017-18 season, the Spartan hockey program decided to make some changes after getting the same results year after year. Under new head coach Danton Cole, the team improved last season’s record by winning five more games to bring its record to 12-19-2. This might not seem too exciting for some, but brings a sense of hope for the coming years.

Two athletes from the Michigan State track & field team have qualified for the 2018 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships, announced by the NCAA Track & Field and Cross Country Committee on Tuesday. Redshirt-senior Tim Ehrhardt and sophomore Nick Guerrant will compete in the Green and White in College Station, Texas, from March 9-10.

Michigan State closed out the 2017 season with a Holiday Bowl against Washington State win in San Diego. The desirable weather also greeted the Spartans as they began preparing for the 2018 campaign. With sunny skies and a temperature around 60 degrees, Michigan State opened spring practice on Tuesday afternoon in East Lansing.

The Big Ten will take its conference tournament to New York City this week for the first time, staging the annual postseason event at Madison Square Garden this Wednesday through Sunday. And after that, the conference’s top teams will come home and sit around for a week and wait for the NCAA Tournament.

Michigan State will be the big dog in the Big Apple. That’s what an outright Big Ten title and a 12-game win streak will do. The Spartans are rolling into the first Big Ten tournament held in New York. MSU (28-3, 16-2 Big Ten) received a double bye and the No. 1 seed for the tournament. The Spartans open play at noon Friday in the quarterfinals against the winner of Thursday’s game between No. 8 seed Maryland and No. 9 seed Wisconsin.
