Cassius Winston and Joshua Langford each had 17 points. Miles Bridges went off for 14 with two alley-oops. Jaren Jackson Jr. has on fire on defense with three blocks. Even Matt McQuaid had himself a game off the bench with nine points, four assists and two big offensive rebounds.

No. 3 Michigan State (6-1) took down No. 5 Notre Dame (6-1) 81-63 at home on Thursday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. In doing so, the Spartans beat their second top-10 team in a week after beating North Carolina on Sunday. Next they will open up Big Ten play on Sunday against Nebraska.

Seventh-seeded Michigan State men’s soccer (13-3-3, 5-0-3 B1G) will hit the road after a pair of NCAA Tournament wins against Virginia Tech and 10th-seeded Western Michigan. The Spartans will travel to second-seeded Indiana (17-0-5, 5-0-3 B1G) on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at Jerry Yeagley Field. The Hoosiers defeated New Hampshire, 2-1 in the third round on Nov. 25 to reach the Elite Eight. This is MSU’s first appearance in the Elite Eight since 2014.

Michigan State track and field begins the 2017-18 season with the Grand Valley State Holiday Open on Friday, Dec. 1 at the Kelly Family Turf Building in Allendale, Michigan. The meet will feature competition from the sprinters, jumpers and throwers.

It was about as successful of a holiday weekend as Michigan State could have hoped for in the PK80 tournament. The Spartans won their bracket by beating DePaul, UConn, and North Carolina by an average of 20 points. Next up is Notre Dame tonight as MSU will face their third top-10 opponent, and second in the top-5, of the season. Here are some things that stuck out from the PK80.

It’s unclear which bowl game Michigan State will be in, but the Spartans are apparently the Citrus Bowl’s top choice from the Big Ten. NOLA.com, citing a source, reported Citrus Bowl officials met Wednesday night in Orlando to vote for their preferred teams and LSU was the overwhelming favorite from the SEC while Michigan State was the top choice from the Big Ten.

As Cassius Winston examined his MVP trophy at the PK80 Invitational on Sunday evening, it was easy to point to his offensive production as the reason the Michigan State sophomore was holding the glorified block of wood. He’d scored a career-high 28 points in a semifinal win over UConn and followed that with seven points, seven assists and five rebounds in the championship victory over North Carolina.

Michigan State wrestling competes in the 36th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational from Friday-Saturday, Dec. 1-2, held at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. Competition gets underway at 12 p.m. (ET) on Friday, and will be streamed on FloWrestling.

After a four-season hiatus, the Michigan State-Notre Dame hockey rivalry is back. The Spartans and Irish, rivals for 10 years in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and 23 seasons in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, are back in the same conference – the Big Ten. And they’ll face each other four times a season for the foreseeable future, starting this weekend at Munn Arena.

Notre Dame has played in East Lansing 47 times, with the first time coming in 1908. The team’s last visit to East Lansing came in 1974. Since 1979, Michigan State and Notre Dame have played just once, in another ACC/Big Ten Challenge game in 2014. Notre Dame leads the overall series, 60-36.

As you might of already heard, expectations are pretty high for the MSU men’s basketball team. The Spartans entered the season as the No. 2 ranked team in the country in the Associated Press preseason poll, and many media outlets have them pegged to win the National Championship.

Notre Dame, fresh off a win against a ranked Wichita State team to win the Maui Invitational over the weekend, comes in 6-0 on the season, while MSU’s lone loss came to No. 1 Duke in Chicago. The only other time in series history when both teams were ranked in the top-5 was the 1979 NCAA Tournament, MSU defeated the Irish in Indianapolis en route to the program’s first-ever National Championship. But to fully understand the Irish this season, The State News caught up with Marek Mazurek, lead basketball reporter for The Observer, Notre Dame’s independent student publication.

That was his Hawaii look and he’ll be going back to dress pants and a sport coat Thursday when No. 5 Notre Dame visits No. 3 Michigan State (7 p.m. ET, ESPN). “Only if (Tom) Izzo wears a hoodie,” Brey joked Tuesday when asked if he’d dress casual.
