The college basketball exhibition setup doesn’t typically allow for high-major big men to face off against like-sized opponents. By rule, Division 1 teams like Michigan State can only play exhibitions against Division 2 opponents. That typically pits teams like the Spartans against exclusively smaller teams until their regular season starts. That changed on Sunday, when an NCAA waiver allowed Michigan State to play Georgia in a charity exhibition.

The thought crossed Mark Dantonio’s mind. And then it just as quickly left. If Michigan State was going to beat Northwestern on Saturday, it would take the game to overtime. “I did think about it,” Dantonio said on his Sunday night teleconference. “I didn’t voice my opinion, but you have to ask yourself prior to that game, ‘What have we been doing very, very well?’ That’s been playing defense.”
