Jacob Isaia was plenty familiar with Michigan State University and its football program during his lengthy recruiting process. Isaia, the grandson of Spartans legend Bob Apisa, obviously had a strong connection with the school and the Spartans have rostered plenty of legacy players throughout the years.

Mark Dantonio has re-adopted one of his old phrases:“Our goals remain in front of us .”Dantonio reference the seasonal mantra on his Sunday teleconference after the Spartans’ first Big Ten loss, a 39-31 triple-overtime defeat at Northwestern. About 24 hours earlier, in the bowels of a building adjacent to Ryan Field in Evanston, Ill., Dantonio delivered his postmortem with proper perspective and strange satisfaction for a losing coach who had suffered his first loss in conference play this season.

Add another early-afternoon kickoff to Michigan State’s schedule. The No. 24 Spartans’ (6-2, 4-1 Big Ten) game at No. 3 Ohio State (7-1, 5-0) on Nov. 11 is scheduled for noon and will be televised on FOX, it was announced Monday afternoon. The one possession games don’t stop. Unfortunately, the winning did. Michigan State’s performance was baffling on Saturday, alternating between a stale offense and porous defense en route to a triple-overtime loss to Northwestern. We’ve got some good, you know we’ve got some bad and we’ve got a little bit of random too.

In hindsight, we should have known that when Michigan State and Northwestern lined up against one another on the football field, records would likely fall. By the time the Spartans’ 39-31 triple-overtime loss to the Wildcats on Saturday night in Evanston was over, several revisions had to be made to the Michigan State record book.
The Michigan State Spartans were once again locked in a close battle throughout the game with another Big Ten foe this past weekend. This time around it was the Northwestern Wildcats, but the Spartans found themselves on the losing end of a 39-31 final score in triple-overtime. And, just speaking for myself here, it felt deflating.

Michigan State men’s tennis wrapped up the fall season by hosting Big Ten Indoor Championships from October 27-30. “I felt like we were competitive in every match against some quality opponents,” Michigan State head coach Gene Orlando said. “We won our fair share, but at the end of the day we would have liked to have won some of the three-setters that we let slip away. The positive is that we were right there in every single match, and a year ago at this time we were struggling to stay competitive.”
The Big Ten announced that Cody White was named Co-Freshman of the week along with Indiana Wide Receiver Whop Philyor.

The 165 yards receiving is a Michigan State record for a freshman and 19th-most overall for a Spartan receiver in a single game. The college basketball exhibition setup doesn’t typically allow for high-major big men to face off against like-sized opponents. By rule, Division 1 teams like Michigan State can only play exhibitions against Division 2 opponents. That typically pits teams like the Spartans against exclusively smaller teams until their regular season starts. That changed on Sunday, when an NCAA waiver allowed Michigan State to play Georgia in a charity exhibition.
“At the beginning of the year, if we got to November and said we still had a chance to win a championship and we were 4-1 in the conference, I think we’d take that,” Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said on a Sunday night conference call with reporters, following a 39-31 triple-overtime loss to Northwestern on Saturday. “And that’s where we’re at.”
The thought crossed Mark Dantonio’s mind. And then it just as quickly left. If Michigan State was going to beat Northwestern on Saturday, it would take the game to overtime. “I did think about it,” Dantonio said on his Sunday night teleconference. “I didn’t voice my opinion, but you have to ask yourself prior to that game, ‘What have we been doing very, very well?’ That’s been playing defense.”
