At kickoff, the match began as a fight for control between the Spartans and the Cornhuskers. Just 20 seconds into the game, Nebraska forward Elyse Huber found an opening and sent a shot toward redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Reilley Ott, but Ott was ready with the save. The Spartans battled for possession of the ball, but allowed a Nebraska shot past the goal line in the seventh minute of the game. In the remaining 43 minutes, Michigan State held the Husker offense and was able to test the defense, though sophomore goalkeeper Aubrei Corder stopped all three shots on goal.
