Take a glance at the various predictions you can find this time of year and very few will mention Michigan State as a team that has what it takes to win the Big Ten – or even the East Division, for that matter. Actually, scratch that. Nowhere is Michigan State mentioned as a team to beat in one of the toughest divisions in college football. It’s not a shock.

Gerald Holmes was asked to name the best running backs in the Big Ten. The Michigan State fifth-year senior’s initial answer didn’t meet the criteria of omitting his own team. “I’ve got to add us in there,” Holmes said at Big Ten Media Days last week in Chicago before relenting and listing Penn State’s Saquon Barkley and Ohio State’s Mike Weber.

The problems from the previous season vanished when Michigan State’s football team took the field. That was in 2010, when Kirk Cousins cemented himself in Spartans lore by leading MSU to a share of a Big Ten title for the first time in 20 years.

In baseball, teams rid themselves of veteran players if they aren’t in contention in order to build for the future. Essentially, they must blow things up in order to build for the long-haul. Currently, Michigan State football is experiencing a similar situation, but on a much smaller scale.

Throughout high school, Dominique Long would sacrifice breakfast for a few extra minutes of sleep. It’s one of the few things he would choose over food. A 6-foot-2, 190-pound multi-sport athlete with a rapid metabolic rate, he always carried some kind of snack around in his backpack. In the morning, though, any additional shuteye before Westerville (Ohio) South’s 7:25 a.m. start was priceless.

What is it, late July? I can’t even tell anymore. All I know are two things: 1) It’s getting closer to football season, and 2) that means it’s blind optimism season for every fan base. Our beloved green and white nation is no different, and I can’t be more guilty if I tried. Guys, maybe we can go undefeated. Oh yeah, hear me out on why we are optimistic right now:

Michigan State hasn’t shown off a throwback in a while, but what should they go with Thursday, Nebraska announced they will be wearing 1997 throwback jerseys this season against Wisconsin to commemorate the 20th anniversary of their undefeated season. First off, woah, 1997 is a throwback. Second, should MSU follow suit? Maybe it’s just me, but I feel like Michigan State football is due for a throwback jersey game.

The chill inside Munn Ice Arena, the 43-year-old home to Michigan State hockey, is a welcome relief from a late-July dose of humidity. Inside, the new head coach, Danton Cole, prepares for his first season with the Spartans since some glory days 30 years ago, when he skated for the late, great Coach Ron Mason.

The Pro Bowler has yet to sign the franchise tender that will pay him more than $12 million this season. And while they’d rather have Bell’s familiar No. 26 on the sideline when practice starts Friday, the guys blocking for him understand business is business. “I’m not mad at him, I’m happy for the guy,” guard Ramon Foster said. “It’s an opportunity for Le’Veon to take care of his family for generations, so why not take care of it now?”

Most of Michigan State’s 2017 recruiting class arrived on campus July 5 and in the following days, but one player stayed home: Woodland (Stockbridge, Ga.) cornerback Shakur Brown. Brown was the Spartans’ latest commit, joining the class in June. After his addition became official, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio explained that he was not at minicamp because he was completing classwork. That process dragged into July.

“His toughness aspect has got to come,” Dantonio said on Monday at Big Ten media days. “You can’t be a wideout, mentality-wise. He has a skill set that is up here. So when you have that kind of skillset, everything needs to come with you to be a complete player.”
