Out of necessity, the Michigan State defense will feature a number of players in expanded roles this season. Since the end of 2016, five players who started at least one game and had eligibility remaining have left the program. Three more potential starters — a redshirt freshman and two sophomores — also left. Couple those losses with the departures of seven seniors who started games last season, and the Spartans have more holes than usual to fill on their defense.
