One year ago, Davion Williams was heading into his junior season at Belleville and was getting ready to play football for the first time since eighth grade. Now, Williams enters his senior season with a scholarship from Michigan State in his back pocket – along with an offer from Spartans Hall of Fame coach Tom Izzo to play basketball once the football season comes to an end.

Michigan State is emerging as a potential destination for multiple top running back prospects for the class of 2018. With Gerald Holmes set to graduate after this season and LJ Scott likely to hit the NFL, the position is a top priority for coach Mark Dantonio and his staff. The staff has already had a few prospects on campus and will have more between now and the start of the season.

Bridges was viewed as a possible lottery pick at the end of last season, but where would he have gone in the draft? Izzo had heard from NBA front-office executives in April that Bridges would’ve gone somewhere between the eighth and 14th selection. So was he a top-10 pick, after all? Or would he have fallen to Charlotte at No. 11, or maybe Detroit with the 12th pick? Ask him now, though, and he’ll only shrug, as he did Thursday before the opening night of the annual Moneyball Pro-Am summer league at the Aim High sports complex near Lansing.

The Michigan State sophomore has traded his title of point guard for law clerk, at least temporarily, as he works for Lansing-based attorney Mike Nichols. All while taking classes and working on his game on the hardwood court. “It’s a whole new experience,” Winston said. “Nobody in my family is a lawyer or anything like that, so it’s a whole new world. I’m just learning each and every day.”

A weight has been lifted off Kenny Goins’ shoulders. Well, actually, off his knee. Gone is the bulky brace the Michigan State junior wore after suffering knee injuries during his redshirt freshman season. And Goins is adding a few things in its place.

Michigan State hockey 2017-18 season tickets will go on sale through the Spartan Ticket Office on Saturday, July 1.
Michigan State wasn’t part of the original conference we know as the Big Ten. The Spartans replaced the departed University of Chicago in 1949 and became a full member in football in 1953. With that in mind, Land of 10 is unveiling our selections of the top 25 Michigan State football players since the Spartans began competing in the Big Ten. Players were evaluated solely on their performance at Michigan State.

Tillman played on the Blue team with MSU teammate Kyle Ahrens and spent most of the game battling fellow Michigan State big man Nick Ward, who was on the Silver team. The two will go at it often in practice going forward, and the freshman will probably take his lumps, like he did a few times Thursday. But it’s all a positive learning experience for Tillman, who has been taking tips from Ward on and off the court.

The 2017 Moneyball Pro-Am tipped off Thursday night with most of the Michigan State players on the six team rosters participating. Sophomore guard Joshua Langford and freshman big man Jaren Jackson Jr. were not in attendance. But Miles Bridges, Nick Ward, Cassius Winston, Kenny Goins, Matt McQuaid, Kyle Ahrens, freshman Xavier Tillman and walk-on Conner George were all there as expected.

Following the conclusion of an uncertain period for the program, Dantonio said the team would be “back in business” during the press conference June 6. Just a week later, it was exactly that. MSU held a rare June media availability at the Skandalaris Football Center. Among a swarm of press members, Dantonio and a variety of players were thrown into the line of questioning.

Miles Bridges was expected to be settling into an NBA city by now, ready to earn a seven-figure salary as a first-round NBA draft pick. Instead, he spent his Thursday night playing for free in front of a few thousand fans near Lansing at opening night of the Moneyball Pro-Am, as the first steps toward an unexpected sophomore season down the road at Michigan State.

Michigan State hockey head coach Danton Cole announced the Spartans’ schedule for the upcoming 2017-18 season on Thursday, June 29. The Spartans drop the puck on the 34-game regular season on Oct. 13.
Heyward is the son of the late Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, who spent 11 seasons in the NFL as a fullback and died in 2006 at age 39 of brain cancer. His brother, Cameron Heyward, is a defensive end heading into his seventh season with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Despite the impressive pedigree, Heyward, 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, is embracing a humble approach to the start of his college career.

The Orlando Magic are giving Matt Costello a chance to continue pursuing his NBA dream. The Magic announced their summer league roster, and it includes Costello. They will compete in the 2017 Mountain Dew Orlando Pro Summer League, which will take place July 1-6, 2017 on the Magic’s practice court.
