The 49ers have a new coach in Kyle Shanahan and Shanahan brought the offense he’s developed over years as a coordinator with him to Santa Clara. For many members of the team, that means they are getting a lot of new information thrown their way during the offseason program. One exception to that rule is quarterback Brian Hoyer, who played for Shanahan when both men were with the Browns and signed a free agent contract with the 49ers this offseason.

Iowa Western Community College coach Scott Strohmeier summoned one of his players, offensive tackle Anthony McKinney, to his office on May 21. When he arrived, Michigan State offensive line coach Mark Staten was waiting McKinney had been receiving mail from the Spartans for two months, but the Spartans were no longer just a one-sided pen pal. Michigan State’s track & field team completed action at the East Preliminary Round in Lexington, Kentucky. One more Spartan will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene with sophomore Justine Kiprotich advancing in the 1,500m on Saturday. Overall, six MSU athletes will continue their seasons.

The national rankings may not reflect it, but future Michigan State point guard Foster Loyer is proving he is one of the nation’s top 2018 prospects week in and week out. The 6-0, 170-pound Loyer led Clarkston (Mich.) High School to the Class A state championship this past season. He jumped right into the travel circuit with the All-Ohio Red team. Through three weekends, All-Ohio Red was 10-2 in Nike EYBL play. And Loyer was a perfect 70 of 70 on free throw attempts.

By this point, you may know that the Michigan State men’s basketball team is the Vegas favorite to win both the Big Ten and the national championship next season. And two of the reasons for this are rising sophomores Miles Bridges and Nick Ward, both of which were named to ESPN’s list of top 25 college basketball players for the 2017-18 season. Bridges comes in at No. 8 while Ward’s at No. 17.

A little more than 40 years ago, Jud Heathcote took the men’s basketball coaching job at Michigan State. A little more than 22 years ago, he retired. Between those two points, he led the Spartans to 339 wins, three Big Ten championships and a national title. On Saturday, Heathcote celebrates his 90th birthday. Counting down from 90 to one would be quite tedious, but in recognition of a Hall of Fame legacy, we have put together the nine biggest wins of the Heathcote era, one for each decade of a long life.

When asked why he chose Michigan State over the various other schools that offered him a scholarship, or showed interest, Gillison had this to say: “I chose MSU because they showed interest in me since I was a freshman. I love the facilities, campus and also I like the people up in East Lansing. Coach Ken Manning was my dad’s high school strength and conditioning coach so there’s a family connection as well.”

Gary Harris exploded offensively this past season, left no doubt that he is one of the best up-and-coming guards in all of basketball, and that he could possess legitimate All-Star potential in a few years. Not only is Harris a bulldog on defense, but after his most recent developmental leap, he is also one of the most productive and efficient scorers in the entire league and that has led to him arguably becoming the second-most important player on the Nuggets’ roster.

When Brendan Black was crowned a state champion back in February, the Hobart senior was intending to go to Indiana. Changes on the coaching staff in Bloomington led to a change of plans for Black, who changed his college colors from crimson and cream to green and white, signing recently with Michigan State.

Michigan State wrestling head coach Roger Chandler has announced that four student-athletes will be joining the team for the 2017-18 season. Joining the Spartans will be Brendan Black (Hobart, Indiana/Hobart High School), Cameron Caffey (Carbondale, Illinois/Carbondale Community High School), Austen Malczewski (Romeo, Michigan/Romeo High School) and Warren Stanfield III (Walled Lake, Michigan/Walled Lake Central High School).

According to Matt Youmans of VSiN, the Spartans are one of many Big Ten teams to open the season as big favorites. In fact, Michigan State is an 18-point favorite against the Falcons to start the season, showing that there is still respect out there for the Spartan program.

If there is one position where being the “next big thing” takes on a literal meaning, it is on the offensive line. The guys up front set the tone for the team offensively and the lack of consistency last year was a big reason the offense was never able to find a groove last year. This season, while there isn’t a ton of experience up front, there may be some surprising depth.

Before prospects announce their college destinations, many of whom will do so this summer, they’re narrowing down their choices. At least six class of 2018 prospects released finalist lists in the last seven days that included Michigan State, giving the team a sense of who it has the best shot at landing between now and signing day.
