With two big men already down for the season, one of Michigan State’s remaining post players was at urgent care Sunday. Don’t worry, Nick Ward should be fine. The freshman sought treatment for a nasty case of the flu after the Spartans’ 70-62 win over Michigan and has not practiced since. Tom Izzo said he did not believe the 6-foot-8 forward would miss Thursday’s game at Nebraska (7 p.m., ESPN).

Tom Izzo has said since the fall that if the Michigan State basketball season reached the middle of January and Gavin Schilling weren’t back on the floor, his 2016-17 season would likely be considered over. Well, mid-January has come and gone.” Unless he didn’t want to be here (next season), there’s no sense in taking a chance,” Izzo said. “He does (want to return), so, in my mind, he’s done.”

Weston Bridges said he felt like it was “the end of the world” when he found out he had torn his ACL in his left knee in his team’s 28-25 Division II regional quarterfinal to Hudson in November. Nearly three months later, Bridges no longer needs crutches or even a knee brace.

Four Spartans scored in double figures as the Michigan State women’s basketball team defeated Minnesota, 93-74, at Williams Arena in Minneapolis on Monday. Michigan State was led by a double-double from senior guard Tori Jankoska, who scored 20 points and tied a career-high with 14 rebounds. She now has seven double-doubles this season. Freshman guard Taryn McCutcheon scored a season-high 15 points, while senior forward Taya Reimer and redshirt senior guard Branndais Agee both added 11 points.

Miles Bridges has been selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday. Bridges averaged 20.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg and 3.0 bpg last week, while shooting 55.9 percent from the floor in games vs. Purdue and Michigan.
